When I make charity quilts, they are what they are. Most turn out a little larger than lap size. I plan as I go sometimes.

I plan the size. My son-in-law and grandson are both 6'7" tall and my son is 6'4' so their quilts are very planned. I usually do theirs in three parts because I do the quilting myself and I can't handle all that fabric sandwich.

As for me I make quilts to fit the bed it will be used on, other then that they plan thier own sizes for wall hangings, baby quilts and lap quilts. Meaning when they tell me there finished. ;-)

I try to make as many blocks/strips as I can while still leaving fabric for borders - I make big quilts unless for a baby or child. Bigger is better for me.

it depends on the need of the quilt. if it is going to a baby i try to keep it around 40" (it was the perfect size when my dd and ds were babies to swaddle them in their quilt till they were around 2 years old) other than that I make it so that it looks right. I have only make one bed size though. working on the second right now.

It varies. Sometimes planned and other times just whatever happens.

Do you try to make your quilt sizes coincide with bed sizes? Or do your quilts just end up as big as the end up?
This was supposed to be a queen size D9P rag quilt. Stopped working on it when I got tired of it and wanted to start another project. As stated by others, Quilts just turn out the way they turn out.
