Oh, wait, are you talking about hand applique or machine? For hand, I do have a lot of different colors and try to either match or complement.
Sorry, hand applique. Do the quilt show judges check the color of the thread?

you can easily get by with 2 colors of thread for applique- a light gray and a dark gray- use the light on light fabrics- the dark on dark fabrics- it blends in and disappears.
i use silk thread for applique- it is very fine and disappears with my tiny stitches.
you can of course buy every color out there if you want to---but who really wants to switch threads for every little piece- i'd spend more time threading needles than getting any sewing done.

100 wt is the weight of the thread- silk threads are 100 wt- and very fine- the higher the number the thinner the thread- 12 wt is like a string-
40-50 wt is the norm for what you purchase for piecing
60 wt is popular for bobbin thread

It gives me a good reason to have a huge thread collection. Why would I want to stop buying.??

DMC Embroidery Floss that is 100% cotton. I just bought a bunch of it yesterday at JoAnnes on sale for .33.

DMC embroidery thread? That's a great idea. You can sometimes buy a little skein for about a dime. More than enough colors for $10!

I use Gutermann , I collect colored thread like some women collect shoes! I like to match my thread as closely as possible to the cloth.

I have several spools of a very neutral silk thread that I use for most of my hand applique. It blends with everything and goes a long way.
