If you truly love it, buy at least three yards. Especially if it is a print with lots of colors. I find that I tend to really like certain colors & if I find a good multi it blends with my favored colors & I can use it in multiple projects. As an example, I have lots of Moda Happy leftovers & also have a bundle of Moda Twirl. The Twirl leftovers will blend beautifully with the Happy prints.

Anyone know about a chart that shows how many yards for fabric you need for each size of a quilt top?

Also, if you see fabric that would make a great one block wonder (OBW) how may yards for a lap quilt?
I bought enough for the OBW to do 2 full-width "stacks," then bought more to use it for borders.

No matter how much I buy, it's usually not quite enough for the first thing I want to make with it.

It totally depends upon your pattern. The more pieces/seams you have, the more fabric you need.

I've never made any OBWs, so can't even guess at that.

No less than 2 yards. Usually, I can kind of 'see' the quilt I want to make with it, which doesn't mean they actually will get made!

If I like it I will buy 3 yards. If I love it I will buy 6 yards. If I think it will be used for backing I might buy 9 yards.

At least 2 metres and if near end of bolt all of it. The fabric may not be available again and you don't want to be short. Some tomes I have purchased 8 metres for a backing for a quilt.
Look at the amount required for a backing the size you use most and keep either in your head or in your purse. If coming to UK we measure all in metres so ensure you have the knowledge . 40 inches equals 1 metre.

I buy 1-2 yds, unless it's for a backing. Then I buy what's needed. I never buy my backings until I finish the quilt top.

3 to 5 yards depending on how much is left on the bolt and how much is left in my wallet.
