One of the national quilt ladies, can't remember which one, said "1 yard if you like it, 3 if you love it, 6 if you can't live without it". Doesn't seem to matter how big my stash is, I still need something else when I get ready to make a quilt.

I am a fairly new quilter...I am a long time crafter though...and I know how easily trying to build a stash of anything can get out of hand both space and money wise. I make myself stick to fat quarters unless I have a project in mind. I pick up a few coordinating colors of a line. If I run across an excellent clearance sale I pick up yardage. I figure that there will always be fabric that I just think I have to have or fall in love with and out of sight, out of mind, lol.

Anyone know about a chart that shows how many yards for fabric you need for each size of a quilt top?

Also, if you see fabric that would make a great one block wonder (OBW) how may yards for a lap quilt?
Here's one for yardage:http://quiltbug.com/Articles/fabric-calculator.htm and I found this on the web for OBW:http://www.glendalequiltguild.org/20...quirements.pdf

General purchases, I usually buy 2-3 yards, unless it really calls to me and I can afford more.

For me it all depends. Once a month I try to limit my spending to $50. Includes estate sales. If I don't spend that, I put it into a stash for the next month. I'm saving for whatever. I don't know. Waiting for some batting to come on sale. My list always includes a couple yards of fabric (minimum) couple spools of thread and maybe a new notion. Always make sure I've got the appropriate coupons also. This week I will be looking for some black and a color. If there is a 1/2-1/4 yd left on the bolt, I take it and the bolt board. I just wrap the fabric back on it after I wash it.

I buy nothing less than 3 yards. If it is something I just gotta have I will get 5 to 6 yards. I was teaching a gentleman to quilt not long ago & he was just buying 1 yard at a time. I informed him that he should buy no less than 2 yards & he didn't think so. WELL, long story short, he now buys 2 to 3 yards & sometimes more. LOL

3 yards every time. I've learned the hard way that if I love a fabric, even with no project in mind, that having 3 yards will serve me well and I've not wasted an inch.
