im a bit like you. I have really wanted to make a selvage (US sp) selvedge (British sp) but I don't like cutting any more selvage off than I need too. So I often find myself cutting my strips and then trimming off selvages. So boo hoo I never get any selvages to use, lol. I like to leave them on so that any leftover I know the name, designer, etc. in case I need more!

I cut them at least an additional inch. I use my selvages in string quilts because I think it adds interest to the blocks. I have seen some awesome string blocks made totally with selvages- I would never have enough though to do that unfortunately
