How much yardage to buy on speculation?
#43
Thanks for the answers.... looks like 3 yards is a good average. In this particular sale, I could get three yards for about (or even less than) the regular price of one yard! Too tempting to pass up. As I said in my original post, I don't see myself attempting anything larger than a baby quilt. Mostly I will do small projects like table runners, placemats, bags, wall hangings, etc.
Thanks again for all the helpful and thoughtful answers!

I like a stash with tons of variety-the more the better. If I see something I like but have no planned use for it, I FORCE myself to buy 1/2 yard max. That way I can buy more variety. If I find a hard-to get HUE vs specific design (a good yellow, good lights etc, non-floral blues for my boys etc)...then I get 3 yards. It must be a hue/light that I would use in several different quilts.

If it is something I think I will use for borders--3 yards (of course it does depend on how good the sale is!!) If I just want that color, a fat quarter. again depending on price 1 or 2 yards. For smaller projects 2 or 3 -- 1/2 yard pieces would probably be enough for most projects.

I buy 3 yards if it's a print,5 yards if it's a solid. But I make quilts to sell,so I probably wouldn't buy as much if I just made quilts just for my family. I have to keep my fabric room stocked. I also keep a bolt of white and cream fabric for blender and backing.

Like you I don't make full size quilts, yet. I've done mostly baby and lap quilts. When I buy fabric for the stash I try to buy 2-3 yards because i'm not sure how much i'm going to need. It all depends on the fabric. I think it become a personal choice.
