I finished a quilt for my son that is all flying geese and I used an edge to edge that was soft swirls to indicate movement of the geese Certainly not as intricate as feathers, but it was effective. My photo does not show the quilting well so I will not post. You all will just have to "trust me" that it worked well.

This is so pretty! I love the way you altered the shading of the blocks, very nice! The black really sets it off!

My quilting stitch brain is sadly deficient in comparison with the pattern side of the brain.

Taking your idea of feathers I'd probably do a modified heart design fitting the geese with feathered sides if that makes sense, then a consistent set of hearts inside the bigger, broader more ornate feathers going around the border.

The thread is another whole set of problems for me. If you don't want it to be seen (and in that case you would just grid around the geese units), then the choice would be a clear type thread or at least one that matches the background, but personally I don't like "scars" of thread going across bright colors so I would probably choose a bright multi-colored thread with a short repeat.

You do such beautiful work, I will just wait and see what you come up with! You can go so many ways with what you have.

No matter how you decide to quilt this lovely quilt it is going to be beautiful. As I looked at it I envisions the feathers but I would place the feathers over the piano keys.m FMQ pebbles in the black and SITD around all the geese. That is my thought but of course the only decision is yours that matters.

While I'm thinking about the quilting, did you use ombre for this or Did. You. Actually. Pick. All. Those. Colors. Individually??? Holy Freaking Goshmoly if so.

Just before I hit send I realized it could have been some sort of precut or collection pack.

To get the geese to pop out from the background, you'd outline them, and do some sort of tight (or -ish) quilting in the background. I thought leaving the geese borders plain would add linear movement to the goose columns, See Picture One:

I did a google search on "wind blowing quilting stitch" and came across this on Mariaelkins.com. There are 2 different ways she does the stitching, a feather one and a mactavishing one, and I like both of them. I do not like the way she combines them, but that's just me. I found this so you could use it with this idea:

The second shows an idea I had for the background wind quilting to go across the quilt behind the quilting on the geese. I'm not sure if it would read as going across behind or just somehow seriously chopped up, though, so figure that out for me, ok?
