As for the carpet, I truly understand. My worry is the treads on the carpet and my cats. So, I vaccum very frequently. Beset I can do. But I am very particular about leaving threads around.
Update on the carpet thing! Talked to hubby yesterday and told him what had been said here about the threads and pins on carpet and he said he didn't have a problem putting tile in there. He said we're not moving any time soon so do what makes me happy....soooo tile it is! I can always put a small area rug by my comfy chair to keep my toes warm. I will definitely be putting rubber mats down around the table though. My back can't handle standing on tile for that long.

Think about using Burba carpet. Is low loft and easy to clean up threads by using a toilet brush. I use flat head pins so can see them.

Try a yoga mat. They're thick and inexpensive, and they're GREAT. Since I got one to put by my cutting table, much fewer back problems. I think someone here rec it. DH bought it for me - probably at Walmart or Target.
