Been there, done that, only it was with our new log burner, could not work out what the awful smell was when we first lit it up, it turned out to be the protective backing on the flu pipe which was supposed to be peeled off before lighting the fire in the fire box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did we feel stupid, no one told us and it was invisible to the eye, we could have set the whole house on fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

whoever thought it was necessary to glue paper backs to rulers, knowing they had to be peeled off to use them, is the idiot. :hunf:

Ohmygoodness, is that supposed to come off? I bought it a few years ago, same darn thing. And I just noticed a few weeks ago that it is supposed to peel off! I have just been too busy to unpeel it. Hey, guess what? My husband broke his arm in February, had surgery, a plate, eight screws and yesterday we had an appt with the physical therapist before seeing the doctor. My husband's name was called and we went into the room where they make the casts, the molds, wrap the owie and stuff and there hanging on the wall was an Olfa Rotary Cutter - 45 mm. And I am thinking - what the heck is a 45 mm Olfa Rotary cutter doing there. I didn't ask, because I didn't want to sound stupid, so I just figured it out --- it is used for cutting strips for making those plaster of paris casts, or whatever, I think! I would wonder if someone isn't cutting strips for a quilt in their spare time in an Orthopedic Clinic!!!! But after sitting waiting for almost an hour, it got the juices flowing and I couldn't wait to get home and cut a bunch of 2-1/2" binding strips. Is that the way the rest of my life is going to be? See something that pertains to quilting and I go off in a totally different world? Gosh I hope so!!!!! Edie

You are not alone! I recently bought a 6x24 ruler and it had a paper backing. I couldn't see the fabric through the paper so took a chance and ripped off the paper. To this day, I thought I had broken some unspoken quilting law by doing this. Glad to find out I didn't! LOL

I have a friend who leaves the paper on to use. She says it helps grip the fabric!
