My friend and I made a wall hanging for her Dad who had been in the navy. We took a navy blanket and cut it down to a manageable size for a hanging and bought Navy patches and sewed them on. Maybe you could do something like that rather than stressing yourself out to make a queen sized quilt.

A Layer Cake quilt would be my choice.[ATTACH=CONFIG]607437[/ATTACH] This is 1 I did for a cousin while she is going through chemo. It is 1 layer cake & fleece(sort of minky). Didn't need to piece the backing, washes great & comfy soft. There is a Missouri Star utube also.

This is a very fun thread. One of the first quilts I made was too giant, but I was ambitious and excited. The pattern I chose was this:

I chose colors that the recipient liked and here is what I made:

I did really simple straight line quilting a 1/4” from the seams.


I was really happy with how it turned out and it was a lot of fun to make. You could easily substitute patriotic colors/fabrics.

OK, bud, I think I can help you here. I'm almost a guy, at least as close as a 63 yo woman can get, lol! We only had girls, so I was the designated boy. I made a baby quilt for my friend, and made up the pattern. It was a simple geometric pattern, and I quilted it using a walking foot and all straight lines. I highly recommend this only if you want to do something more complicated than just squares. I used squares, with sashing and cornerstones. I "fussy cut" the cornerstones, so I could have a cute little animal in the middle of each one, but I didn't have to. Fussy cutting is when you plan the cutting of a piece so that a motif or picture is situated just how you want it on the piece.

Here is a picture with the parts labelled and the sizes noted. I would use bigger squares, as you need to git 'er done by May. The yellow lines show where the quilting is.

The sizes shown are finished sizes. If you are going to use standard 1/4" seams, it adds 1/2" to the measurements. So the squares are cut at 6 1/2", corners are 2 1/2" square, and the sashes are 6 1/2" x 2 1/2".

I still haven’t got started actually sewing my quilt. I was planning going to hobby lobby yesterday since it was my only day off. Not realizing it was Sunday...
I really have digested a lot of information from this thread and I do really appreciate I found a Missouri Star pattern I think would be really appropriate. Out of time hour glass. I already see this as awfully ambitious. I believe this is well with in the ability of my ability. I thinking only two colors navy blue and white. That way I can buy extra material and set out making my blocks making some extras and if one becomes too catawampus I can put it to the side and keep on moving. I have scaled down my intended size more like a twin size something to cover up on the couch

Definitely a nice lap quilt or nap quilt would be good for the first one... It's harder than it looks lol. I taught myself with books and this forum but often wish I had signed up for a class or two. I would look around and find a nice 12 inch block that uses just squares and half square triangles. Squares are easy and HSTs are almost as easy really and they open up the possibilities immensely. But really anything you take the time and effort to make will be appreciated people love quilts... and to be honest I love giving them as gifts.

I tried to order the digital download of the quilt pattern I had difficulty getting the website to take PayPal. No worries I will get this thing ordered. That will be a dizzying quilt especially in blue and white. It’s my first attempt at a quilt and I understand all of the things that might discourage me. My only reservation is after I get the top completed can I actually make a quilt. It might just be a fleece backed blanket.
You guys guys and gals have been wonderful with the information y’all put out. I’m going to do this and because y’all help me and I’m sure I will continue to learn.

The pattern is ordered and who ever owns that company is equally sarcastic except better at it than me. I’m looking forward to getting this digital down load. I’m confident I can get this done. I bought a new blade for my fisckar 45 mm rotary cutter. Hopefully by the weekend I can produce a photo or two
