    I didn't know that!
I've gotten all the stems and leaves
zig-zagged in green and when I started to
sew the centers I could only find one!
The others had come unglued and were
    on the floor.

I don't know if you have ever seen any of her (Patsy Thompson) videos, but she does some great tutorials, including quilting on applique.

By the way, your applique is gorgeous! Please post on your finished piece. I think I may have bought that pattern recently and will have to watch some videos myself.
Thanks for the link. Her videoes are fabulous.
I feel like such an ameteur....hmm...I guess I am...

You can do a couple of straight stitches first to secure it, then blanket stitch right over the top of the straight stitches. You won't see them. I've done this with satin stitch too, but I think blanket stitch ends up looking better, especially if you haven't done it a lot. You must stitch down all raw edges so they don't pull up. Then you can do your decorative top stitches. When that' all done, make the quilt sandwich and quilt away!
I also use the blanket stitch by machine. There are different ones so try them out on scrap material first and choose the best for your flowers. Mark down the number so you know it for next time. I would sew all the beads etc on first before quilting, it makes every thing go a lot easier.

Is that the same as Trapunto or similar to it? Trapunto is something I have admired, but not tried. Is there a book that you bought for Bernina class you're taking?
Trapunto is real easy to do and it makes applique POP on a quilt.

Here's what I do: for a flat look, I sew down the applique. I use a zigzag with invisible thread. For a raw edge that will fray a little on the edge, I straight stitch just inside the edge of the applique. I do the same after the quilt is layered if I want the applique to stand out from the background. Hope that makes sense. I don't have any decorative stitches on my machine.

I decided to use bits and pieces of
    everyone's wonderful advice...
I zig zagged around the stems and
    leaves and freemotioned around the
flowers and details. Now I'm in the
process of hand sewing tiny black
    beads around the flower centers.
I think it looks fairly good for a first
and thank you all for your help.
Hopefully the next photo will be a finished quilt!

OMGsh... I think It's finally ready to quilt!
Here are a few photos of it done and ready to go to a LA.
I sent a pm to charisma from this group and hope she will quilt it for me. She is so talented and I LOVE all of the quilting I've seen of hers.

Thanks to all of you for your advice ... I think I used it all!
