I don't think wanting to use only good quality fabric is being a fabric snob. I think most serious quilters can tell the difference between too thin, too loosely woven fabric and great quality fabrics. It just makes sense to spend our money on the best that we can afford.

I never buy FQ at all, I like yardage and have tons from a bunch of different stores. I give away most of my quilts and have made about 91 machine quilted quilts. I would go broke buying only from tha LQS. I try to only buy good quality. Most fabric including towels and wash cloths thicken up after washing. I pre-wash all my fabrics before use. Another reason I don't buy FQs.

I have bought inexpensive fabric countless times...have had issues if the fabric is thin and I didn't realize it before I bought it, but for the most part have not had problems...I just stay away from the polyester/cotton blends and stick to the cotton only....if you are on a fixed budget like I am (ie retired) it isn't always possible to by the more expensive fabrics and if I want to continue to quilt I have to make monetary cuts where I can.

I found that Wal*Mart's fat quarters are not that great either; however, some of their yardage is very nice. Guess you just have to feel the fabric.

Recently Walmart has upgraded their fabric department in my area, some of the fabrics are better than Jo Ann at a real price, not one inflated to use a coupon. It is all about using your sense of touch and sight when purchasing any fabric. So I shop where I find the fabric I want and the price that is fair.

I had that problem with a couple pieces from Walmart. I had some paper-piecing and washable glue. Worked for me. I also layed the quarters out and pressed them all before using them. DH had nothing to do (was TOTALLY bored) so I got him to help. Now if he gets bored he goes to the basket of washed material for quilting and just starts pressing.

I agree, but I want good fabric.... cheap. I buy most of my fabric at www.thousandsofbolts.com So far it has all been quilt shop quality brand name material at less than $5 a yard, except for wide backs and batiks.

I have gotten good fabric at Joann and even Walmart, but I have to be careful to check for quality.

Put some of the thinner pellon fusible on it and you will be fine.

If it's any comfort, I am furious about a LQS fabric I paid $10/yard for. It ravels so much and so quickly that I have lost my 1/4 inch seam allowance on many of the cut pieces. The two other fabrics, from Walmart, are not a problem in any way.

It really comes down to assessing the quality of the fabric before you buy, no matter where you buy it.

I buy from wherever has good quality. Being from a lqs doesn't guarantee it is good quality.
