    Well, here are some pictures.

If you all remember, in this thread I posted a link to a blog that had a free download and Brenda Henning video for a Mariner Compass Star.

I mentioned that I could view the video, but my computer speakers are shot, so I can't hear sound.

I watched the video and saw her instruct how to make up this compass star, but I couldn't hear what she said.

I'm only partially finished with it. The part about "squaring" it up into a square is the part I'm concerned about. I saw how she did it, but, you know how they are on these shows. IT'S EASY! And then they never sew them together for you on the show. They just tell you how to do it, tell you it's easy and then let you go off cursing when it turns out not to be so easy.

I made a first attempt and a second attempt which is good enough to be my center block -- if it turns out I can sew the square part around it!

My first attempt. Not so good, couldn't fit it together that well ...

My second attempt. Much better -- not perfect, but good enough if I can sew on the square border templates.

Cordelia, I was debating making a Mariners but decided against it. That is just about my favorite thing. I made a huge mariners quilt this year already and needed to do something different. Your is a beauty! I'm impressed with all those perfect points and love your paper piecing. That will be fabulous as your center!!

Thanks, Pat. It's foundation pieced, so the points are perfect. It's fitting the points in the center part that is the challenge. That, of course, is where the HUGE bulk is of all the seams joining there and it's hard to really sew it. I pinned it there, but forcing the needle through it and pressing and pulling it through warps it a little and it just doesn't come out perfect there.

Can you post a picture of your mariner compass star quilt? I'd love to see it.

jstitch, by all means make one if you like. I'm not sure this will be my center block. On Saturday, I'm going to attempt to put the square border pieces on it. How that works out is the deal breaker. My first attempt I'm just going to stuff and turn into a big round pillow. If I can't get this one the way I like, then I'll sew a binding on it and make it a table topper.

If I'm not happy with it, I'll make another and another or do something else. The more I make, the better I hope they'll turn out.

I was going to use an all black background and bright batiks, but I felt like using my Christmas fabrics. I actually would like to have an all blue and white quilt though.

That star is made up of fabric that's all "glazed over" with glitter paint, etc. I always buy the glitzy stuff. And if it isn't glitzy when I buy it, then I spray glitter paint on it. I didn't have to spray anything on that one though.

Anyway, fat quarters are enough to make that star.

Im in group 2 also, I started piecing my center over the weekend. I hope to finish it in the next couple days. I am too chicken to try a paper pieced block but I love the Mariner Compass so maybe someday I will try it.

I am doing 4 - 12 inch blocks to amke my center.

    Terri,

Like I could really copy your block. Maybe in my dreams. I'm not that good.

I have been working on a block and so far I'm not impressed. It's probably good I have until November. It looks like I'm going to need it.
