I have a oliso and I'm very happy with it. I don't ever use steam so I have not had a problem with spitting. I have had a black and decker and a rowenta too. I didn't care for the rowenta but I don't remember why. You can buy a bunch of cheap irons and still be ahead. I'm not sure the $$$$ are worth it.

My Rowenta is about 10-12 years old and it says to use tap water only. I tried tap water twice and it spit brown water, so I rinsed it out and have used only distilled water and it never, ever spits with distilled water.

Husband just bought me the Oliso 1800 from Joann's online. It is the yellow one. I love it. Most irons are 1600, so this one heats higher. I'd noticed that often when I would try to iron out the fold of the fabric, it was still there (even with steam). I ironed the fold in last night's project with the oliso and couldn't even tell there had been a fold. It does take some getting used to it popping up and down, though.

i have 3 used, old travel irons i have gotten at garage sales for $2 or 3. they are small...perfect for pressing small quilting sections, do not auto shut off, and the perfect size to use with small pressing surface close to the sewing machine. i guess you could compare it to 'assembly-line' setup. works for me. just thought some of you might want to try it. the little irons designed for this application are pricey. i like to make-do when i can. keep all the ideas coming. i enjoy reading each of your comments and consider you all friends.

The Rowenta instruction booklet I have says do not use distilled water. Don't know why you shouldn't but I don't use distilled. :)

It never ceases to amaze me when I hear of someone who does not take care of their iron. How can they not know? My mother taught me, her mother taught her. As the others have said, you only use distilled water and never leave your water in the iron, lazy or not. It is always best to stick with GE anything. I've had one for 24 years. I bought another small GE Light and Easy travel iron (and for small projects) at a thrift store for $2 and it is the best little iron too. Good luck!

Have a Shark also and love it...heats up really fast and doesn't spit. This one is on the ironing board next to my washer/dryer.

I also have a Maytag Cordless that I have on a small table next to my sewing table. I just have to turn to the right and the iron is right there.

(I also have an elastic strung bracelet that I keep on the cords of my irons. When I plug it in the bracelet goes on, when I unplug the iron the bracelet goes back on the cord. Even thought both irons automatically turn off, this way I know it's unplugged, along with all my sewing machines.)

Great idea. And I also have a smaller board that hangs on the back of a closet door (w/iron holder) that folds up and down (again for small work). I decorated the metal hooks (go over the door) that show on the other side so it doesn't look so tacky. I love ingenuity.

I was told that the rowanta that is made in Germany is suppose to be better then the rowanta made in Japan. The one made in Japan leaks.
