I just finished piecing a king sized "Plaid Obsession" by Martingale. I used a dozen glue sticks, maybe more. I haven't been quilting long, and doing long strips it helped avoid ripping out. Also, it stabilized them so there was no problem with the ends of the seams coming unraveled. The piano key borders I made before I became a true believer (actually a 'glue' believer, snicker) started to come apart a bit, but I decided if I got too het up over it and started resewing the last 1/2" of each seam in the 36ish feet of pkb, I'd never get done! I decided the quilting would stabilize it enough.

The most interesting thing I found about the disappearing purple glue sticks is that when you get them wet, they reappear! Dark, too. That was freaky, especially since I'm using muslin for the back. I'd already almost decided I'd better make sure if everything was going to stay together after it got washed, but didn't want to have to deal with all the layers of a sandwich to replace a piece of sashing or whatnot, so I got out my serger and very carefully serged the edges. Washed it with 2 color catchers and dried it, now I'm re-ironing it and checking for problems. The glue is completely gone, for those who were curious about that part.

If you store your glue bottle upside down the tip will not get hardened glue in it. It's ready to go when you need it.

I glue mostly for my binding so I don't have to have pins on it while I sew it onto the quilt. I also use it on difficult seams or when I really want them to match up perfectly.

I use Acorn Precision glue baste. You can reposition and iron over the glue without a mess on your iron. I saw it on a preview with Alex Anderson.
