Make up a template of the 9 patch blocks and then use some tracing paper and draw out designs using the fabric intersections as the points that you change directions, put in a circle, loop, leaf, star, etc, i.e., say you are doing a continous curve to the outside of the first patch and then in the middle patch you curve in to a mid-point on the opposite side and back out again, etc. So the intersections become the points where you vary the design. You can do this in so many different ways that you can probably get each block designed differently.

If you have a tablet, I saw a cool idea. There are drawing applications where you can take a photo of your quilt top and then using a stylus or your finger, you can experiment by drawing on top of the photo to see how a motif plays out. It's called Sketchbox on my Ipad..look around and google for more such programs..

I like the idea of a flower within the 9 patch and a meandering vine in the frame attached to the end of the flower. You cold use one favorite flower or several different ones.
