I made the quilt that Jeanne S gave us a tutorial for obviously depending on the fabric you chose as to whether masculine or feminine. My husband and nephew love the pattern.

I made these two quilts for gentlemen. Think they liked them at least.

I have let my color choices determine if the quilt is more masculine or feminine. Deep greens and browns, tans and oranges are what usually draw my eye to the more masculine quilts. A few years ago I used the same block to make quilt for a grandson and granddaughter you would never know they were the same only difference was fabric choices.

I made my oldest son a quilt from Jenny Doan's tutorial called Quadrefoil (sp) in batiks and he loves it.

my husband says "darks are boring." he loves scrap quilts (because he remembers me working with the various fabrics over the years) and quilts with things like Star Trek & Star Wars. Our daughter actually loves the darks and the plaids .

From my own male perspective, I have to say that the type of quilt that appeals to me has strong, bright reds, greens, and blues. The pattern or subject matter means less to me. That said, I also like lighter pastels and brightly-colored batiks, but the pastels -wouldn't necessarily be my first choice. Growing up with a mother who quilted, and who raised the four of us by herself after my father's early death at age 39, maybe my feminine side is somewhat more developed than others, but I would like to think that the appreciation of beauty in whatever form is neither masculine nor feminine, but rather human.

I saw a quilt once that was just a simple 9 patch made with plaids and white..it was very striking! If I remember correctly it was a simple 2 color quilt.

Ok I know that this is an old, old thread that got revived by a question, but I just want to make the point that it kind of depends on the guy. My husband's favorite color is yellow, so I'm making him a yellow quilt. Not something most people think of when they think "masculine". My adult son's favorite quilt - he actually asked me if he could have it - is this one with all the pretty pastels. He said it reminds him of summer. I thrilled that he wanted it and immediately handed it to him, along with a big hug.

This is my go to pattern. It can be made to look rustic, classy, feminine, masculine, youth, or baby. Free pattern here:

The sooner we stop thinking about masculine/feminine when it comes to colours, clothes and many other things, the sooner there will a lot more happier men and women in the world.
