Match thread to front or back on FMQ?
I am getting ready to FMQ my wall hanging. How do you decide what thread color to use on the back if there are going to be various colors used on the front? I tried matching the back thread and using different on the front, but it shows through. Should I just use the same in top and bottom on each section and not worry about the back?

On my multi coloured crayon quilt, I really wanted to put the thread to match each crayon on the spool and black thread in the bobbin to match the mostly black backing. I fiddled for about an hour trying to get a balanced stitch and finally just went with the same colour on the spool and bobbin.

I have taught to pick a backing to match with what you will be quilting on the top. With FMQ, your bobbin will always occasionally pop up so worry more about the top than the back. That is why a busy print on the back is so preferred so that any errors won't show up on the back.

I often use different threads on the front and back. The little bits that sometimes come through are always on the back for me and not really enough of an issue to matter. Try a practice piece with what you really want to do and see how it would come out. It will probably be just fine

This is my philosophy as well. The only people who ever look at quilt backs are other quilters.
Another thing to think about, although since you're making a wall hanging I'm not sure it will apply: When you wash the quilt, a LOT of quilting boo-boos disappear, and the threads have a tendency to tighten up so you don't see the bobbin thread on top.
