For those of you who are new to the board or haven't heard of mug rugs, go to the top of page and click on search and put "mug rugs" in the box. There are many pictures and threads.

I made a poinsetta mug rug with matching mug for a friend last Christmas. I'm planning on making more for this Holiday coming up to sell.

I've been in 4 mug rug swaps and there is only one that I won't put my coffee mug on, it is priceless to me and don't want to get it stained or ruined. I put it on my kitchen island for 'pretty', the other 3 I do use. At my computer, my recliner and in my sewing studio.

I hope to make more for gifts and hope that they'll be used ... I don't make 'priceless' gifts, LOL.

I put my ice tea on one and the condensation came through and marred my table. I think they need something water-proof with the batting.

Okay, I've read through all the threads but I don't see an answer to my question which is, I find coffee and hot chocolate stains almost impossible to get out without bleach and, try as I might, my coffee or hot chocolate cup always "leaks" down the side of the cup. Does noone else have this problem and, if so, how did you solve it because I just love the little mug rugs.

I spray and wash them and don't worry about the stains for the family. When company comes, I use a different set.

Have you ever tried Heat & Bond Iron on Vinyl by Thermo Web? It is a vinyl that you just iron onto fabric and it turns any fabric into a water resistant fabric.
Great for makeup bags, lunch bags, and now I think Mug Rugs! After you are done making the top portion of your mug run and have it like you want, you could just iron this stuff over it and then bind it. It is sewable also. It believe it comes in shiny and matte. You can then just wipe off the stain!

I'm making about 8 for baby shower prizes. I guess I don't care if people use them or not. They are cute and each has been designed to match a specific mug. (pics later). I'm having fun doing them. What happens next is someone else's business.

A mug rug is what you get when a placemat and a coaster have a baby! lol I usually make mine about 6 x 9 inches, although I made one in the shape of a heart for my July Secret Pal that was a little bit larger. There is no hard and fast rule about the size or shape. Just have fun with them:-)
