I've been using plain black mouse pads on all my end tables; they make great coasters, but mug rugs would be much prettier!

I am confused about them....I think coaster for a mug/glass, hotpad for under platters, and placemat for anything on table. SO what is a mug rug size for? It doesnt seem big enough to put a plate on and too big for mug?

People sorta make them what ever size they see fit. A mug rug that I have right next to me here at my computer is 8" across by 6" high. I can set a cookie/snack and a mug. Personally, I usually have a can of diet coke and a tea mug. I think it is just something a bit different than a coaster and a great reason to practice making a smaller size quilt, something you can personalize as a small gift for someone and/or use up scraps of fabric... which we all seem to have. Some people put a pocket on one side to slip tea bags in or a snack. Hope this helps. :-D

Generally I use "INSUL-BRITE" instead of batting. Sometimes maybe a scrap of double knit for the backing. Helps keep mug rug firm without being cardboardy.

I started out using those leftover pieces of cute border fabric~ you know the ones that are just too cute to throw away but what do you really do with a piece of border? They are ideal for a 6x10 mug rug! I have a thing about using stuff up and this is perfect. Next I'm going through my small orphan blocks and left over flying geese. Before I quit I'll have more rugs than I know what to do with ;-)

I made my first ones a week or so ago, now I have them hanging in my den and in my bathroom. I decided they looked more like small art quilts than mug rugs...

    An aside about mug rugs......................

Dumb me, I've spent the last week making mug rugs for prizes for my DD's baby shower. Did I take pics--------------NO. They are all packaged up with their matching mugs in gift bags.

I intended to take one shot of all of them. Didn't happen. Older DD came by yesterday to put prizes and favors together and I no more thought about pics than the man in the mooon.

LMAO - oh my. Thanks, I needed that.

As I sit here drinking from my sweating glass which has dripped inumerable times onto the desk, I will be making some soon. I have oodles of scraps to use.
I see a great need for them - family, friends, co-workers, teachers, swaps, etc.

Maybe when I get home from a wedding this evening would be a good time to start.

Now that I know what they are - How Cute is That???
I am going to try one and if it turns out OK, I have a lot of people that would probably love to have one. What a great gift idea. Thanks so much. Everyone on here always makes my day.
