If you google mug rugs you can find scads of free patterns and tutorials. Once you see them, you will be able to come up with hundreds of ideas. It's such fun to personalize them for the recipient.

A mug rug is what you get when a placemat and a coaster have a baby! lol I usually make mine about 6 x 9 inches, although I made one in the shape of a heart for my July Secret Pal that was a little bit larger. There is no hard and fast rule about the size or shape. Just have fun with them:-)
And there's a gazillion threads with them, here on the QB. Some of those threads have some terrific links.

Really ... you just sew a bunch of pieces together and make a mini quilt. A great way to practice a technique or use up orphan blocks. Or to just have some fun putting things together in no particular fashion. Anything goes!

Has anyone used the vynl heat & bond on the wrong sides of the mug rugs?By that I mean on the underside of the top between the top and the batting. It should still make it water proof without the look of the plastic.

What kind of batting do you put in them to stop the mug from becoming unsteady?

Any batting that isn't pieced together should keep your mug rug steady. I have been using mine for many months and have never had a problem with the cups/mugs tipping. :-D

Make one with what you have on hand and see how it works for you. It is a great way to use up scraps of batting & fabric left over from bigger projects!

That reminds me of my Mom. I gave her one for Mother's Day and she uses it on the arm rest of her recliner. Oh well, she thinks it was a great gift.

I made some for the girls at work and they love them. I made some for my sister, she uses hers, and wants more for each season/holiday. I put them under candles, and some bigger ones are under plants on my windowsills, sort of a custom-made windowsill liner!
