Start with a white board and an erasable magic marker pen. Draw lots of doodles and swirls until you have a flow going. I think stippling or meandering, where you are "not supposed" to cross over a line of stitiching, can be hard for new quilters. IMHO it's a lot easier to make loops, trying to keep a size in mind for a fairly uniform look (think quarters or half-dollars).

If you use a busy print for the backing and match the bobbin thread to it, mistakes won't even show. At the beginning, do ditch-quilting for the bulk of the quilt, then do FM loops in the border where you probably have patterned fabric, again, so the mistakes don't show. Pretty soon you'll be making loops all over the whole quilt. Once you feel comfortable with loops you'll be able to move on to other FM designs. Good luck!

fmq = free motion quilting, or meandering without a pattern to create the desired quilted look
