Need ideas for a necktie quilt
My grandson wants me to make him a quilt from old neckties. Since I've never attempted this before, I'm wondering how well they would launder. Would the quilt have to be hand washed or dry cleaned? I assume the ties would need to be pre-washed by hand before I make the quilt. Whatever help or ideas for a pattern you can clue me in on will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My quilting guild had a tie challenge. We had a big bag of ties we passed around. The ties I had, I just took apart and washed. If they weren't washing machines tough enough, oh well. You can use any pattern that fits your ties. Most of the ties did just fine. I made crazy quilt squares and used the tags from the ties. I've seen some beautiful Dresden plate blocks. And a great New York beauty. Good luck and enjoy.

My guild's library has a book of quilt patterns made from ties. I have no idea of its name or anything, but you could do some googling if you want a book of ideas... Oops, you really asked about the washing of them....sorry. You may already have the answer for that though.

Get out your seam ripper and start taking apart ties. They come apart easily. There is an inside lining that needs to come out. I washed my ties in Woolite and hung them out to dry. It was during the Summer and they dried quickly. Your library may have the book Daddy's Ties by Shirley Botsford, it's a great idea starter. I made a tie quilt from the pattern Simply Woven off the Moda website.

Here's a tutorial on a Dresden plate, but it also has good info on how to prepare them:

I have made necktie quilts...I washed them in the machine on gentle with synthrapol( some bleed dye). I stabilized mine with light weight fusible, the did Dresden plate or g'mother's fans...although many designs work. Usually many older ties are made from silk, and they don't hold up well to lots of washings....not a good choice for a "dragger" type quilt.

I threw all my father's ties in the washing machine with Tide. They did become a giant puzzle to untangle and I hung them on the line to dry. They all survived the wash so they will be fine in a quilt. Someday they will even be picked open and made into a quilt.

Up up and away
When my dear friend's husband passed away, she asked if I could do anything with his ties. He hadn't worked in 20 years, so they were pretty old, most didn't pass the usable test. I tried to do something meaningful to them, and they love hot air balloons. I made the basket into a pocket and tucked in a tiny teddy bear, another passion of hers. I think it turned out great, and she loves it. Quilt doesn't have to be all over ties, this was a wall hanging, but the idea is to incorporate them, not be covered in them. Good luck!
