I usually just use what I have on hand with my batiks and I mix white and ivory but not happy when I started using darker lights. Should not gone as dark as I did with this item. Just my opinion:

I mix them to some extent. My favorite neutrals are grays, so I add taupes and some 'taupy-tans' and ivory. But just can't add those with more earth tones Browns in this mix. Or if I go with the earth tone Browns, don't mix much gray in.

Yes, this is where I come in also. At first I didn't like mixing in whites with others even when there were enough for a good mix, but as I have seen more and more done that way, I find I do like that look in scrappy quilts that have a lot of all sorts of neutrals in a good balance.

Good question. I just picked up a few FQs yesterday that ranged from white to cream to gray and have been wondering the same thing. I don't have a lot of light neutrals and have been wanting to make something with a variety of neutral prints in the background.

I have never made a quilt using lots of different neutrals, but I think that it would depend on the quilt and what you are trying to achieve. If you want the neutrals to be in the background and disappear, you want them to all be in the same shade. But, if the neutrals are part of the the design of the quilt, then you want a bit more difference between the fabrics.

I agree. If they're mixed sometimes depending on the hue of the neutral, parts can look almost a off and un complimentary effect.
