"neutrals"
When using an assortment of pale neutrals for Background fabrics - do you usually keep them within one color family?
For example, when using prints with an ivory cast to them, a white-white or grayish piece would bother me. I am more comfortable with the prints being quite close to being similar in color and value
How about you?

I personally like the assortment of all different shades of neutrals. It bothered me at first, but the finished effect was much more interesting to me. I know we are all different.

I prefer keeping the same category of color tones. I did one with all creams and gray-greens. The greens ranged from light to quite dark.
A white or a lime green or Kelly green would have been very distracting in that quilt.

I made a lap quilt using Moda Modern neutrals , it had greys and creams mixed w/ some colors. My DIL chose them and it lookd very nice. Not really my cup of tea but younger folk like different colors and oatterns .

What a thought provoking question!
I personally don't like stark white, so I used a tone-on-tone white for the background when I did a LQS BOM.
I think if the quilt is quite scrappy, mixing the neutrals would look just fine.
It all depends on the look and mood you are aiming for. In general, I stick to one neutral colour family in a quilt.
But my idea of what a "neutral" is depends on what the rest of the colours in the quilt are: I'd love to see Mom-6's quilt with the creams and grey-greens.
