Try a jelly roll race quilt for you first project. That's what I did. Jenny Doan from MO star quilt company has a great video on how to make it. Have fun.

Try a jelly roll race. There is a great tutorial for it on Missouri quilt site under tutorials. It will give you a quilt top and great experience sewing 1/4 inch seams

My best advise, if you have a quilt shop nearby AND they have classes, try a beginner class, you will learn so much and might save some costly mistakes!!

You say you would like to do the hour-glass block. Just be aware that there will be a lot of bias (fabric cut at a 45 degree angle) which is very stretchy. Just be aware and handle the bias with care.

Welcome aboard. The best advice I can give is don't pick a pattern with curved pieces like I did for your first quilt. Also don't expect it to be perfect. Don't worry, your skills will improve as you go and most mistakes won't be noticeable after your first wash. At least that's what I tell myself. Just do the best you can, relax, and have fun with it. As mentioned before your local library is an excellent resource for information and ideas.

May I suggest a book: The Better Homes and Gardens Complete Book of Quilting. The photographs and diagrams are wonderful and you will learn so much from it. Good luck in your quest to learning how to be a quilter.

I'm sure they are used for strip quilting are there other uses for them in the quilt world binding, edging and such? My 2nd question? Are there any standards for edging your quilt? I'm thinking of doing a 8 inch block and doing the double Hour glass. I wanted to do a queen size but just talked myself out of it for my first quilt. The pattern looks easy enough watched a wonderful helpful video on it. Did I make any sense or am I just babbling... again.
Take a look at Liz Katsuro's site at www.jellyrollfabric.net. She not only sells jelly rolls but she has some free patterns you can download, plus she has gathered five books of pictures of quilts her customers have made. Lots of ideas there. She also gives you some tutorials.

Hi Mama879, You are right, there ARE no stupid questions, I wish when I started Patchwork ++++ years ago that there were forums like this.I am not a great lover of jelly rolls, they tend to fray if you keep them long - depending on the quality and seem expensive to me.However if you haven't built up a stash of fabric they are useful.Look on the internet for quilts made from them, youtube is also a great place for inspiration.Enjoy your new -I was going to say hobby-- but maybe that should be art and obsession !
