I have the 4.0 and have issues with it all the time. The manual is pretty much useless. The auto thread cutter gets stuck all the time (the repairman/shop owner) and was told me to get use to it. The needle threader had to be replaced. Had to have the bobbin winder tension adjusted. Was sold a plastic 1/4" foot that broke and when I went back was sold a metal one (didn't tell me I could buy a metal one the first time) so I've learned to ask if accessories are available in metal. I'm now having issues with it stalling when I stitch slow. Don't know if its me or the machine. Just make sure you have a good rep/repairman, mine leaves a lot to be desired.

Joyce, I notice you live in GA. I bought my Pfaff from the dealer in Deluth (Discover Sewing) and the first QE 4.0 had problems and they replaced it with the newer 4.0 and have had no problems with it. I talked several times with their repairman and he highly praised the Pfaff. This dealer has two other stores in the Atlanta area and I recommend them if you are close to them.

I have the pfaff 4.0 and absolutely love it. I have other machines {Vikings} but much prefer my pfaff for the even feed IDT, that's why I decided to buy it. Wonderful for piecing and quilting and the throat space is almost 10 inches and I have quilted up to a queen size quilt on it. This machine has many wonderful features and the 9mm deco stitches are beautiful! I love mine and would recommend it highly.

I have an older Pfaff that I bought specifically because of the IDT and would not hesitate to buy another one.

I have the Pfaff Expressions 4.0 and love it. Seams come out almost perfect and not having to deal with putting the walking foot on is great. I love my 4.0 and would not trade it with (according to store where I bought it) the only difference is a few more decorative stiches.

I have the Pfaff 1475CD that I bought back in the 80's and LOVE it! Also have the Pfaff Tiptronic 2040 which has the curved front (where the heels of your hands rest) and love that feature also. Didn't "need" it but bought the Tiptronic when the Folk School where I work bought them for the Quilting studio so that I could have one at home to troubleshoot if needed. (Haven't needed to. Yea.) Since then someone donated an Expressions 3.0 to the School because she couldn't make it work. I used the manual, tried it out and it works beautifully. They DO have to be threaded correctly but that goes for all makes and models. Everyone LOVES the IDT and its Free-motion capabilities!!

I believe this depends on the DEALER!...My Pfaff dealer stocks just about every part imaginable, and all work is done on site - and we NEVER wait for parts to be delivered. I love my Pfaff (and my Designer Diamond) and my dealer ( Wilson's in Hagerstown, MD)......I would suggest you check around for another Pfaff dealer.....

I have 2 Pfaff machines. Both 1471. Bought them on Ebay. Like them so much I bought one for my daughter and she loves it too. That model has 99 designs and also the needle down feature which I really LOVE! I also bought a Pfaff Freestyle that has the IDT but no needle down so it sits upstairs and never gets used

I love the IDT on Pfaff machines - I'm on my second as I literally wore out the first. My current machine is the Pfaff Quilt Expression 2.0, predecessor to the 3.0 and 4.0. When I bought this machine the thread cutter and knee lift for the foot were brand new and I was leery of them; also the 2.0 was being closed out at 1/2 price - a huge factor on my budget. I'm still not sure I would use the additional features of the 4.0, but I do love my QE2. The IDT is a small foot that retracts when you don't want it (I rarely sew without it), so it is always readily available. It only takes one hand and a second to engage/disengage it. I expect other manufacturers to adopt the IDT when Pfaff's patent expires in 15-20 years.

My machine has never been in the shop and the only problem I've had is a burned out light bulb. I sew on it 6-10 hours nearly every day. I'll be looking for another Pfaff if/when I wear this one out.

I have the Pffaff 4.0 and love it. It did have some problems but they are fixed now. Besides the IDT I love the needle down and thread cutter that are available on other machines. There is another feature I like. When you stop sewing with the needle down the presser foot raises just enough so you can turn a corner or correct. I use these features constantly with quilting. However they may be available in less expensive models that do not have the features you do not want. If you do get one with features you think you will not use, try them for an extended period of time and you may find you do not want to live without them.
