I found that while the pens are great for marking diagonals on binding fabric and triangles, the are definitely NOT great for marking stitching lines for quilting. I was marking a pretty complicated pattern for a whole cloth quilt and was interrupted for a while. Then, discovering that the pattern needed a small change, I pressed the area and found that the pen had stained my fabric and ruined the whole thing (thankfully it was a small quilt and not bed sized)! I am back to using the water soluble blue markers.

If you do like the Frixion pens, then you may want to check out your favorite place to pick up school supplies. Walmart, Target, Office Depot/Max have all had Frixion pens on sale with their school supplies. I was able to pick up the 4ct retractable pens at Target for $2.99. LOTS cheaper than any quilt shop. LOL

Using the pens and having the quilt or fabric get cold has been discussed many times on I think about every blog I subscribe too. Luggage does not travel in the warmer areas of the plane and I will never put fabric in my freezer.

As an aside: Did you all know that there are refills available for the pens? Yep, just found that out myself.

Frixion pens - all you need to know

I steam mine off with a pressure boiler iron and sadly, it does come back if it's not washed. In fact, under certain lighting (stella) you can see the ghosting. But I've not had it return after putting the quilt thru the wash.

For those who say the Frixion returned after washing . . .could it be the product used? I use OxyClean (the one with the yellow lid, not white). I've yet to have it return.

As we were having so many opinions wrote to Pilot about Frixion pens here is the reply.i did say I was passing information on.

FriXion ink “erases” due to Pilot’s exclusive thermo-sensitive ink technology.

The thermo-sensitive ink turns invisible when it is heated. Normally this is through the rubbing action with the pen (this is how it ‘erases’) but any form of heat will turn the ink invisible, including hot radiators, irons and hot sunlight instance.

The ink will only return if it is exposed to extreme temperatures of around -12 degrees and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to prevent this.

If your quilt is exposed to this kind to temperature and the ink does return, you would need to simply iron the quilt work or put it on a radiator and the ink will again disappear.

Also, as the ink is water based and not permanent washing the quilt on a couple of occasions is likely to remove the ink anyway
