I am 67 and haven't really been quilting for a really long time. I have always loved hand work. My Mom passes away in 1988 and I took up quilting shortly there after my sister and I got her quilts and supplies. I am so proud of you young ladies and men who love this craft. It's such a beautiful rewarding thing to do and such a happy gift to share with friends and family and to those in need.

The youngest member of our quilt guild is 16 and has won several ribbons at local fairs

I got into quilting in my late 30's. Just wish I would have done it sooner.

I'm 28. Started at 17 though. There are quite a few 20 and 30 something's in the modern quilt guild I've started going to.

I get harassed about my knitting hobby most. Apparently only grandmas knit. And they only knit ugly things out of scratchy pastel yarn. :hunf:

I had a brother in law tell me this when I first started a few years ago, and I was only 34! I think quilting and handmade in general is getting very popular with the younger set. My son's fiancee is 21 and she loves it and so does all her friends. The success of Etsy says a lot, too

Perhaps it's THEM that's old, not realizing how cool and hip handmade is now!!! LOL!

Although not really "young", I am 41, I experienced the same type of stunned response. I have crocheted since I was six years old. Before quilting (Jan. this year!) I very rarely went anywhere without my bag of yarn and container of hooks. People have always told me I was too young to crochet! I would just make them something practical in response! Those same people come to me time again asking for baby clothes, afghans, dish cloths and scrubbies. I have offered to teach them but they never take me up on it! I just figure it's their loss! Bty, my 19 year old daughter lives sewing and quilting!

Hasn't he heard? 50 is the new 30. Although I am 57, I made my first quilt in my early 30s, which is still quite young. Many of us here have been making quilts for years and years, starting young.

I'm definitely not a spring chicken at 38 but absolutely not old either. I have been sewing for quite a few years and now I quilt and other gift items almost daily. If I'm not sewing I am definitely looking for new ideas or thinking of some new project. So let your friend know that not only old people quilt but all age groups. I personally havent met alot of quilters locally that are in their early years so to say but I know they are out there. After all the is no such thing as old quilters just extremely knowledgable quilters.

I turn 22 next week, and have quilted since I was 20. Before that, I sewed garments and knitted. I'm only one under 40 in my guild. Don't get me wrong, I love my girls at guild and we have a blast at retreat, but it gets a little lonely, because I'm at a different stage in life (i.e. young, newly married, college) and it would be nice to hang out with another quilter my age who has the same taste in music, movies, etc. but can still drool over fabric! Ah well, one can dream :)
