I have been buying fabric online now for 2 of the 3 years I have been quilting. I live in a small mtn. town and I do not drive (physical limitations).

My favorite places are: equilter in Boulder CO. Never have a problem. They also have lots of Novelty Fabrics. Vintage Cars, Great baby fabrics.
Hancocks of Paducah: batiks by most designers
Quilting Treasures.com
Blankquikting.com
Quiltinaday.com

We now have a quilt shop up here "Nuts & Bolts"
Good luck and have fun shopping!

Re: Tips on building a stash. I do primarily 2 different things.

#1 is where I have a particular quilt pattern that I plan to use and buy fabrics just for that quilt; I always buy extra yardage in case of errors, plus leftovers are always welcome in my quilt stash. (I'm a bit physically uncoordinated, so I sometimes make really stupid errors.)

#2 (and this is really the best "stash builder") is that when I see something I really like, I buy it. When I'm ready to use these fabulous fabric finds, I cut small strips from them and use those strips at the fabric store to find coordinating fabrics.

More often then not, I buy fabric first and plan the quilt tops later. I very rarely pay full price for fabric; if I don't have a coupon or it's not on sale, I usually don't buy it.

I've ordered from some of the sites mentioned, but I also like www.fabric.com. Big selection, good sales. Good customer service.

i've ordered from joanns and had to return the package (at my expanse). i found the fabric to be very thin compared to other brands. i believe they buy 2nd quality of some lines of fabric. i won't buy online from them agin, sale or not.

you cannot make returns at you local store.

I searched every local quilt shop and lots of online sites and found just what I was looking for on EBay and at a greatly reduced cost. I had the quilt top put together and was searching for the perfect backing. I found just the color and pattern online and it was less then half the price of buying 108 " backings online.

Lone Star House of Quilts http://lonestarhouseofquilts.com/index.php Very speedy shipping and awesome customer service.

I do NOT order online from Keepsake Quilting. I get in the car and go there.  :D

And about the secure ordering, most sites do not switch to the https until you are actually processing your order, so do not skip a site that you are just browsing because it does not seem secure to you.

i never knew what http://meant. explain please.
i'm a slow learner.

I too shop online. Favorites are Fabric.com, MyBlueBamboo.com ( I had the opportunity this past fall to visit their shop while in Minneapolis for a wedding WOW!), Keepsake Quilting, Pacific Rim. But don't forget to support your local shops who are struggling to stay in business. I try to spread whatever small wealth around.
