Always...
I have always called it bunny ears. Gets furry after a while. I usually use on my 301 machine or if the piece is small and only will catch on one of the feed dogs.
It is also called a "thread saver". I never use one.
I just strated.
I'm doing great without them using my Janome Horizon, adjustable stitching hole and automatic thread cutter. The thread cutter is suppose to leave tail end length that will not jam in the machine.
I always try to use one. It saves a lot of thread.
I don't have straight stitch plates for either of my machines so I use leaders a lot, always when chain piecing. Holding the thread is so ingrained in my brain, that 'nesting' has never been a problem, but 'fabric stuffing' can be without the leaders. I never use enders for several reasons.
Using leaders does not save any thread for me (it actually uses more because it's more sewing), but it makes for even starts because of the sole plate issue and that's worth it for me. I use the same small folded over pieces over and over and have been known to trim and use them as embellishments on art quilts when they are finally retired from active duty. |
I hold my thread, much easier :)
Most of the time - especially when doing a special project. However, it is only sometimes on my straight stitcher.
I keep a scrap bag of USED lightweight paper piecing paper and use these as leaders, no need to butt to fabric i just lay the tip of the fabric on the paper and run my seam. When finished I just pinch the paper and tear.
