Can you please give me suggestions on which of these two borders you would use or would you use both and if so what sizes?
The first picture is of my dissapearing nine patch quilt top and the second is of the two fabrics I have from this collection that I have enough of for the borders. The light green will be the backing fabric and I have a stripe for the binding. This is only my second quilt so I am having a bit of a problem deciding on which border or borders to put on this top. Thanks in advance for your opinions. Quilt Top Fabric for Borders |
Both fabrics are pretty, but I prefer the red
I would do a 4-6 inch red, depending how big you want your quilt, maybe the binding could be the other fabric. Very pretty quilt

I am thinking the red, because the top has a bunch of the green, but not that much red.... so I think I would go with the red...
I'd go with a wide red border, with the binding also in red.

Not to be different but I would do a 2" border of the red to frame the center. Then a 5 or 6" border of the green. Binding in the red. Can you tell I like multiply borders.
Can't wait to see what you do. |
I like the red one.
I like to do a small border in a color that will frame the quilt first, like the red, and then a larger outer border.
I would use the red.
I like multiple borders also. I would do red first, then the green. By the way, your quilt top is gorgeous!
Love the red!
I totally agree with bjeriann, 2" border of the red and then a 5 or 6" border of the green. Does your stripe have both the red and green in it?

Depending on how big you want your quilt I would put a 2in. border of the green then a wider of the red.
Absolutely, you'll love red borders!
I would have to see how the red and the green each look right next to the binding. Right now I am leaning toward the red or a skinny red and wider green. Can you post a pic of the binding fabric?
I don't care for the green-too washed out. Red border would look best.
I think the quilt needs a narrow border to contain the colors - like a really dark green, the a wide border of the red. If you use the red without a containing strip, then those red blocks on the edge will visually bleed into the border. It doesn't take much fabric. I cut mine 1 1/4 inches wide.
I would do two first red then the green about 2" each or larger to the size you want
I'd go with the red!
The red just seems to speak to me.... I think I would go with that. Beautiful quilt by the way
Use the red . It will frame the quilt and add a punch of color. The green is too pale for this top! Love it! A narrow(1-2" border of a dark color like black) and then the red border would look Fab', but it has to be narrow. I would do a 1'black first!
peace :D |
Beautiful quilt!! I vote for a red border.

Thank you one and all for your suggestions. They are a big help! It helps me understand why something does or does not work. Which is what I need as a newbie! LOL
I am beginning to see where the green is maybe a little to light for this quilt. It definately does not do a thing for it as a first border. Some of you have suggested a small inner border in a dark color; black or green but the quilt top has dark brown in it would that be a better choice? I am using the red in it for sure. If I do a dark 1 inch border first and then the red, what size should the red be? Thanks again!! |
Dark brown would be great. I was writing from the reply so I couldn't see the quilt to chose a color for the stopper strip. If you need to purchase it, look for a red based brown rather than a grayish based one. I cut mine 1 1/4" so they finish at 3/4". 1 1/2" finishing at 1" would be fine, too. I cut my wide border 5 1/2" for my big lap robes which are about 65 by 75. I think the purple one I just finished was only 5". Put "For Purple Lovers" in the search box if you want to see those dimensions. In looking at it, I see the wide border should have been cut 5 1/2". AH, well, what's done is done.

I vote red.
Thank You Irishrose.
I was not sure if one could tell from the picture if it was black or brown and wanted to know if it would matter either way. A newbie can never be too sure. LOL I will have to purchase the brown so thanks on the tip of making sure it is a red brown. Your Purple Lovers Quilt is beautiful by the way!! |
This is only my third quilt since I decided to start quilting, so I am a beginner, too. Just a beginner who loves color. Be sure to show us the finished quilt. A D9P was my first and it was fun.
I have years of apparel sewing experience, but did only two simple quilts in all those years. |
I think I would prefer the red.
I vote for the red border.
I like the darker
I think the darker color frames it well...so red would be a nice first border. I also love multiple borders. Will you post the other fabric that you'll be using for the binding? It is a stripe? What colors are in the stripe?
Looks great so far! |
You could do the red (burgundy) with the green and white cornerstone. Then bind it in red. Just a suggestion.
Red for me!! Very pretty!
I think the red
