This is the first square I've done with my featherweight. It's a paperpieced square, and I'm using florals from my stash. It's just a sample, so would appreciate helpful criticism. I'm wondering if it's too busy, and also if some of the florals are too large. What about the colours together? Any input would be helpful. I was thinking of making a 4 block by 4 block baby girl quilt. Thanks!

You've done a lovely job! & I like all the fabrics.
The busyness is okay, but you need more contrast. See how the darker blue & pink stand out? you need two like that opposite each other & it will be fine. |
Looks neat! :)
|
Hi, I think it is too busy- you need some sort of solid
|
well i like it..is that pattern card trick. all the fabrics may be taking away from the pattern. I didn't see right away that it was card trick. i really like the blue and mauve together
|
I agree - your quilt block is very nice as far as the piecing but a little more contrast between the fabrics would help it stand out a little better. Your fabrics are nice.
Thanks, Sherryl |
I do like it but I agree with dorrell ann. Maybe something that reads a little more solid in some of the pcs. I really like that pattern and I love florals. Your piecing is great! I think this quilt will be awesome.
|
I like all your fabrics but not all together lol
I would go with fewer florals, more contrast as someone else said, maybe also a big floral with a small one, but just not as many as you have. Great job on your new Centennial!! hee hee I remember :D |
I like it! Take it and put it on the wall and then stand way back. That always help me judge. I tend to go back and forth between wanting the fabrics to blend and having definate value changes. How do you really feel about it?
|
Yes, too busy to clearly see the pattern but I like that style. Kind of shabby chic. So either leave it or if you want to see the Winning Hand pattern put in more contrast. Maybe solids for the lights?
|
It's the creamy large print that is discordant to me. Maybe another blue? Your color combination is very pretty and it's not too busy, IMO.

waves to Canuck 9P!!! (from another Canuck!) ~~~~ It's lovely and would make for a nice baby quilt. The only change I would make would be not to have those two dark ones side by side, or perhaps even eliminate them. Yes, perhaps more contrast as others have pointed out would be better, as they and similar fabrics could create. Though perhaps you like the subtlety that less contrast gives? I think this could work out quite lovely! A note to all ... sometimes we have to remember that traditional fabric placements is not necessarily the way to go. Especially if one likes it. |
I think it is fine but it would also look wonderful tea or coffee dyed.

maybe only work with 3 or 4 fabrics. hard to see the pattern.
|
I love the block, but I agree that it would look nicer in more contrasting colors.

I like it, but I am partial to florals of all kinds. It might be easier to pick out the pattern if you do it all in the pink blue alternating like the lower left, just a thought.
|
The fabrics are definitely taking away from the pattern. You need to use fabrics next to each other that are different values. The florals are pretty but perhaps put a solid or blender type pastel in every other position. The small flower pattern on light background, next to small flower pattern on light background just doesn't work in any quilting pattern. Make sense?
|
I agree with quiltmouse...contrast is the key. Looks like a fun block. Show more photos as you go please.

I really appreciate all your honesty - Kas asked how I really felt about it, and I don't really feel it "works". I like the pattern, though, but am going to rethink the fabrics. No sense "wasting" fabrics or energy doing a bunch of blocks and then not being happy with the result. I think I was mainly trying to see how this block went together. So now I'll finetune it, and pick some different fabrics. Thanks SO much for all your suggestions re. value, contrast, etc. It really helps. DH just says he's not fussy about it, but can't pinpoint what could be improved. I knew I could count on my quilting pals to help me out! BTW Tryphena Louisa, my FW did an awesome job with the piecing!!!

I agree, not enough contrast in some of the sides

I love it! Maybe go with a darker fabric on every other point.
Or if going for subtle, alternate the large and small scale prints :D:D:D |
Hard to see the pattern...more contrast needed...I love your fabrics individually and even together in a different pattern. Good quilting
|
I agree with most of the above, that you need to alternate the busy with non busy, but the block is great and I want to see the final results. So glad that your little FW is doing a wonderful job.
|
Make a copy on a black and white copier and you'll be amazed at how the contrast (or lack thereof) will show. I think you did a really good job but some of the fabric seem to need a bit more contrast.

use print a print that looks like a solid. for texture and I would move the mauve opposite the dark blue give more contrast. jusst my opinion.
|
Your colors are very pretty and all that you need is some contrast and it will be great. :-D
|
It reminds me of a cottage shabby chic, which by the way I like. I could picture it draped casually on the back of a white whicker chair on a porch. Cute.

I've laid out another possibility of the floral fabrics, both with the beigy coloured background, and also with a white background.
I've also laid out a totally different type of fabrics, in several different arrangements. I may be totally off the wall with these ones.....it certainly gives a different effect, but might be more suitable for a baby quilt. Or.....I may need to go out and buy some fabric! Please give me feedback. Thanks! #1 Another arrangement of florals with beige background #3 one arrangemnt of other fabrics #2 Another arrangement of florals with white background #4 another arrangement #5 Another arrangement |

I love it and the way they all come together. Keep going!
|
I like to stagger the lites and darks so they compliment each other. The lights are getting lost in each other.
