I like the green one. :)
Before you decide on the background, you need to also decide on your sashing; it will affect the entire look of the block. You might want to consider putting a different color (solid?) in the center, perhaps a gold?
I like the dark blue, It makes your plates pop.
Stand back about 5 feet, close your eyes tightly for a minute, open and what color do you see first, thats the best choice. That will be the key color. Do one on each background and do the same thing. The most harmonious one will stand out.

Bridgette, I did the Eleanor Burns' dresden plate from one of her shows/books. A photo of mine is below; in it (which is only a top so far), I only had about 5 colors repeated in the plate, one of which I used for sashing. I was just playing around with some fabric I had given to me and wanted to try Eleanor's method. I would rather have had another row of blocks, but ran out of fabric. (The binding is the same as the sashing.)
There are so many ways to change the look ... you just have to audition and see what you like as far as the plate center circle, the sashing, corner blocks. If you can take a dk. blue background square and one of your plates to the fabric store, you could maybe see what's right for you there before you spend your money. |
I love your navy background. And your plate colors are so happy. Your grandmother would be proud!

dark blue first and then the green.

I love dresden plate, I have made two of them. I love the dark blue fabric. I would put the plates on a white background and use the blue as sashing and or a border. Your plates are beautiful. Hope you share pictures when it is complete.

Bridgette, sorry ... am intruding on your post to say thanks to you and CoriAmD for compliments paid to my quilt top. (It looks better in reality - a little brighter; the blades on the plates' colors match the bitty flowers on the main fabric.)
I am sure your quilt will be beautiful..relax and enjoy the process.
I like all of them... for different reasons. no help here...
All the colors in the plate really pop on the dark blue. The darker green is my second choice. Hope this helps.
There all lovely and I would use all of them.

I like the dark blue!
I like the first one - great contrast.
Although I really like the color of blue in the second picture, I think the first one with the dark blue makes the plate stand out. I have about 1 - 2 yards of the dark blue material myself. I've been saving it for a quilt for a friend. I just need to pick out the other fabrics that I want to go with it. Anyway, I vote for the dark blue in the first picture.
At first I thought the first one was a little busy too, but I still think it is the best color and I don't think red would work at all.
I have a question that I've been wondering about for quite a while. I'm just starting to quilt and am still on basic square patch things. But, I have a pillow my mother made using this pattern and would like to make a quilt sometime using it. I was never sure how to assemble it. Are the "plates" sewn onto squares or a full size backing? It didn't look pieced (other than the "plate"). |
I also like the first one. The contrast really sets off the design.
I like the second one, the blue. It seems to be in the same color "hue" as the plate. :-)

I like the first one, but I might consider doing a different color center. Something that blends in with the plate, instead of the background, but still stands out. But as is, it looks good. Keep up the good work! I found doing my first and only, dresden Plate to be somewhat challenging. I did mine with rounded edges, but I really like what you did with the having it pointed.

I like the first one.It looks real pretty with the dresden plate.
My first choice is the dark blue, and then the green.
Green is my choice as well. I think it adds a lovely background for the really nice work you've done.

I love the light blue background -- really makes the colors pop! :D
