With all my quilts I have never pre-washed. Scrappy or a design no pre-washing

I have been quilting for 8 years and have never prewashed any fabric, I like to work with the new stiffness. I put a color catcher in the washer after the quilt is made and have never ruined a quilt. I have made red and white, and black and white and have never had dye run, however I never use hand dyed fabrics or batiks.

Some people do, some don't-- all make great quilts...the only reason to really (stress) over pre-washing is if you have a fabric that may run (bleed)...and you can test as you go along for those...checking reds (which are the bigest culprits)or handdyes/batiks;;;
i would not be starting over, there is nothing wrong with the 1 1/2" squares you already have!

I HAVE NEVER PREWASHED MY FABRIC AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH OVER 30 QUEEN SIZE AND 50 LAP QUILTS I HAVE MADE.

I use cottons mostly but have some with polyester pieces in it.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is an Accuquilt die that is 1 1/2" square, so they will all have to be cut out again by hand.

What I am curious about is do you use any and all cotton fabrics, or do you mix pastels and darks, anything goes, or kind of stick with one type of thing? I want to make one but since I am starting over with scraps again, it will be awhile away.

Whoever told you this fabric had to be washed was somebody who prewashes their fabric. I have never prewashed my quilting fabric and lots of other people don't either. And use whatever colors strike your fancy. froggyintexas

I went to a program today where a lady was showing her quilt collection. They were all hand pieced and hand quilted. She had made a postage stamp quilt form 1" (finished) blocks and all of the blocks were made from black and white fabrics. A few had a little red flower. All her friends had given her little pieces of the black and white fabric so she had quite a collection of different pieces of fabric, then she put a white border and another row of 3 postage stamp blocks and bound it in white. It was quite stricking.

What about cutting 1-1/2" strips, many different prints, sew strips together and then cut rows varying the cut,,,isn't that done in postage stamps?

Also, to pre-wash Or not...whenever washing, good idea to use "Color Catcher" (p.s. I hate to pre wash)

I'm mixing everything as far as colors. My PS is going to be 9P alternating with a full square so I have matched my 9P's on the back of a 12" + vinyl tablecloth square. (Sometimes I'm a bit of a control freak.) Can get 4 of them per square. Then stack the squares and lay them in the bottom of a storage drawer. I sew the 9P as leaders and enders. Waiting for the 1.5" swap squares to come in so I can get this one done! Although I always prewash I'm not letting it bother me with this one.

Here's a thread which explains it.

I wait and wash before I give them to whoever. Better get some of the stuff so in case it bleeds . Going to write it down and pick it up with my glove tomorrow ! Thanks

Good luck. I started a 2 1/2 square quilt 4 years ago and only work on it occassionally. Hopefully it gets done some year.
