I need help deciding whether to sash this quilt. Part of me just wants to sew the squares together and be done; and part of me knows the sashing will make the blocks pop. I've attached some pics: One on the design wall, then there's either the yellow or the blue for sashing. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Brenda

I love the yellow sashing with these pretty blocks :D:D:D

Scrap Happy 04-07-2011 11:17 AM

I like the blue sashing best but think it would look pretty without one or with the yellow too.

cowpie2 04-07-2011 11:17 AM

Normally I prefer sashing between blocks for a rest for the eyes. But in this case, I actually like the first picture with the blocks right next to each other.

CloverPatch 04-07-2011 11:18 AM

I like the blue, there is so much yellow in the blocks that is almost looks blendy.
Great looking blocks!

IrelandDragonQuilting 04-07-2011 11:18 AM

I like the yellow too :)

mommamac 04-07-2011 11:18 AM

If you don't sash you'll have a scrappier looking quilt but you will need more blocks or wider borders to get desired width

If you do sash, you're right - the blocks pop.
I think the blue/yellow combo looks great but would alternate - one blue - one yellow - one blue ....

frauhahn 04-07-2011 11:22 AM

I'd go with the blue!

damaquilts 04-07-2011 11:26 AM

I kinda like them without the sashing too. They disappear on the yellow and the blue from the blocks blends too. Although out of the two I would pick the blue if I had to pick one.

QuiltnCowgirl 04-07-2011 11:36 AM

How about sashing vertical in blue & horizontal in yellow? (or vice versa). Will bring out both colors & the blocks, plus keep it kind of scrappy at the same time.

Bluphrog 04-07-2011 11:42 AM

I'd pick a sashing color that isn't in the blocks. Where the sashing intersects with the same color in the block, you lose the integrity of the block.

merrylouw 04-07-2011 11:51 AM

I think sashing will really make the blocks pop. I know you're thinking of blue or yellow, but how about black? It might really be dazzling.!

JenBlossom 04-07-2011 12:21 PM

I vote for without sashing, or I even like it with the white on the design wall. But then I like a lot of white in my quilts so it's probably just me :)

magnolia 04-07-2011 12:47 PM

I like it without sashing. Very pretty.

Jo M 04-07-2011 12:50 PM

I'm partial to the blue sashing.

susie-susie-susie 04-07-2011 01:31 PM

I think it needs sashing, but I don't think the yellow lets the blocks shine. They seem to blend into the sashing. The blue is too dark in my opinion, I would go with a lighter color. That will make the blocks stand out. Just my opinion, and I'm partial to the green in the blocks also the white in the blocks with a kinda bird footprint pattern would look nice. Sorry to sound so critical, I really like your blocks and the fabrics you have chosen.

I would sash with a kona solid!! green or blue. i dont think you need anymore pattern in this quilt.

MTS 04-07-2011 01:36 PM

Here's my unsolicited 2 cents:

If you DO add sashing in whatever color you choose, may I suggest taking one block from the center column and undoing the 2 halves. Then use a half block at the top, then the 3 whole blocks, then the other half block at the bottom, with the sashing in between.

The measurements will work out exactly the same, it's not really any more work, and it will give the whole top just a bit more interest than the same-old same-old 3x4 layout.

Oh, and the color for the sashing = not yellow. ;-)

This is what I think also. You have many other color choices if you choose to use sashing to really make your blocks POP. What size are your blocks? Are they enough alone to make the quilt the size you want? Or would you need to make more blocks for your finished size? Just a few things to consider.

Your blocks are really nice :-D

dunster 04-07-2011 01:44 PM

I think the blocks float on the yellow sashing. That's the look I would go for if I decided to use sashing. They also look great without sashing.

Rumbols 04-07-2011 01:50 PM

I like the blue. Love your colors.

This was my thought too. I love your blocks!

roseOfsharon 04-07-2011 01:53 PM

I like the blue for the sashing, it makes for better eye appeal I think :) or Black as someone mentioned as well :)

twixbar 04-07-2011 01:55 PM

I really like the blue sashing.

bamamama 04-07-2011 01:56 PM

I like it without. If you do, the yellow looks best to me.

Great looking blocks!

I agree with CloverPatch... The yellow blends in too much with the blocks, whereas the blue makes all the blocks stand out much more.

sueisallaboutquilts 04-07-2011 02:32 PM

I like them better w/o the sashing.
I did a D9P and was going to add sashings but I'm really glad I didn't.
Just my OP !! :D:D

Candy Apple Quilts 04-07-2011 02:35 PM

I'm voting for the yellow. :-)

emerald46 04-07-2011 02:53 PM

I'm usually a sasher but with all those colors and that pattern...I really love it without any sashing!

brendadawg 04-07-2011 04:25 PM

Thank y'all so much. I'm still deciding, but I'll be sure to post a pic of the finished product.

CarrieAnne 04-07-2011 04:31 PM

I really like the blue!

Krystyna 04-08-2011 02:36 AM

I like it with no sashing at all. The blue and yellow both look nice, but each yields very different results. The question is - what do YOU like?

smagruder 04-08-2011 02:41 AM

Blue

jitkaau 04-08-2011 02:43 AM

Better to sash than not to sash and my vote is for yellow.

sand344 04-08-2011 03:06 AM

Love the blocks. My favorite sashing for making blocks POP is black.

quiltqueen61 04-08-2011 03:09 AM

I agree, black would be perfect.

This was my thought too. I love your blocks!

I, too would try black and thin sashing, or none. Not so keen on yellow. I like your blocks!

east side quilter 04-08-2011 03:15 AM

no sashing

mona202 04-08-2011 03:17 AM

Blue

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 04-08-2011 03:18 AM

Have you tried it with black sashing. I made a scrap quilt and the black made it pop. If you don't like black then I'd go with blue.
