The first thing I do when i start to machine quilting a quilt is to sew all around my quilt! Cannot think of anything wors than this!

I do whatever I want. If it works, do it!

This question makes me giggle. In our quilting circle we have a precious woman who has quilted and taught quilting for eons. I always say "I am ironing" when I am pressing seams, just old habit I guess and not important enough to me to remember to say press. Her face contorts and she squirms and then she can't NOT say anything and correct me...you are pressing dear. I am trying to do better now and remember to say press. So I break HER rule! LOL

This is how I feel too. I don't think that following a few simple rules, like accurate cuttting and piecing, will hinder my creativity. In fact, I have more time to create and express myself with fabric because I'm not constantly picking and resewing things so that they fit properly! A little investment into accuracy goes a long way.

Things like following or not following patterns or prewashing vs not prewashing seem more like a personal preference thing than rules to me anyway.

Me too!.....I've found they are soft, durable and inexpensive compared to 108' backing.

Previous post was supposed to be a 'reply with quote"....didn't make it. So, referring to using sheets for backing. I do too...sometimes, no always. But I've found a brand that has a 200 thread count that are soft, durable and inexpensive; especially compared to the 108" backing at $15 per yd.

Let's see....

I never pin pieces, just blocks when I am joining rows.

I participate in a group on line that requires prewashing. I combine those leftovers with whatever I have on hand that is NOT prewashed.

I don't press. I iron.

I don't use leaders or enders for doing triangles.

I have a rule against removing most seams.
