I don't know of any "rules" that must be followed in quilting, but I was told, when I first started quilting that the binding had to be sewed on by hand. I broke that "rule" because sitting in the position for hand sewing is very hard on by back and came to realize that there is no good reason to hurt while doing what I love to do. Besides that, I machine sew my pieces, machine quilt my quilts, why not have a very nice machine sewn binding also. Mary

NO Rules.

Rule #1: There are no rules.
Rule #2: See Rule #1.

I never prewash unless I'm dealing with red. And I always use the lines on my mat to cut. My mom would die...she always says not to use the lines. :)

I do whatever I darned well feel like. People like my quilts, but they only go to family members for the most part, are not going in a show.

I have been machine-sewing both sides of my binding, do not make bias binding, nor do I do that angled seam for my bindings. I rarely pre-wash, and don't miter my borders. I double-fold over my fabric when I cut it.

I also mixed washed and unwashed fabrics because I used to prewash everything...

I machine-bind...or at least I plan to. I don't pre-wash.

What I've found comforting is that I don't really know "the rules" so therefore, I do what I want and see what happens ! Sometimes Ignorance is truly bliss !

don't know the rules, so don't know if I am breaking any... not worried about it either.

I figure as long as I and the recipient like the finished product... then who needs rules :)

I am still on my first quilt and was not aware of any rules (ha,ha). Mine will be a learn as I go technique....glad to take suggestions, but nothing written in stone.

I iron rather than press, gasp! I've mixed white, tan, and ivory in the same quilt. I don't square up at every step. I machine sew the binding and now that I'm using an attachment on my machine for the binding, I use single fold binding rather than double fold.
