I bought Cate Tallman-Evans pattern, "Leaf Quartets".... because I thought it would be a great pattern for a cozy, homey quilt. The picture on the package is very monotone (almost greyscale). I love fall colors, and the pattern involves leaves, so I know I will use browns, golds, rusts. But I've also admired some very cozy looking quilt designs that also incorporate blue with the browns.
So I drew up the pattern in EQ5, and experimented a little with colors. I didn't play around with the borders too much. I think the outer border may be a decision that waits until I actually have the project underway. I have four colorways to post....it might take two tries. Thanks for being patient. I vote for #1. All are lovely, though!

""""#1 for me :-)
#1 for me too.
i like #1 n # 4
Im the weird one, I really was drawn to #3. I like the suggestion of the sky behind them....or above them,
I like them all , but I think I like #4 the most!
I like #2 -- there is just enough blue and neutral to make the rust and gold brighter.
#1 looks a little monotone (dull) to me. #3 has too much blue - overpowers the other colors #4 has too many colors - the sashing seems to become the focal point instead of the blocks JMHO. |
#1

Thanks everybody... keep those opinions coming!
Bottle Blonde... I like your explanations! |
I like the first 2.
I like the first one the best as well. The second and third one almost take on a southwestern look. The 4th one seems a bit busy, and like another poster said, seems to draw the eye away from the leaves. What would it look like if you did a light or sky blue as the background for the leaves?
It's a pretty pattern! |
I prefer #2. The blue makes everything "pop", and the pale green provides just the right contrast. The two blues together in #3 are too matchy-matchy for me. #1 looks a little washed out to me (plus my family is biased against green); #4 looks a little busy.

I was drawn to #1.
I like #1 and #4. Can;t wait to see it when you get it done.

I like #1

No. 4 is my favorite.
I like #4. I like the blue in it. My favorite color.

Different colors sure give it different flavors.
I like #1 the best. (To truly "test" us, post them again in a different order - |
I like number 3...
I like #2.
#1 - very soothing #2 - the blue pops just enough to highlight the leaves #3 - too much blue #4 - I actually really like, but the blue sashing maybe is too dark and takes away from the leaves block. |
I like the first one best. That is a beautiful pattern.
I prefer #2 but all of them look great!
I like #4. I would also be interested in seeing it with the blue and green reversed -- the sashing green and the triangles blue. And I wonder about a little brighter gold - almost a yellow. There are lots of true yellow leaves around here in the fall as well as some that are almost a true red. There are always some that stay green until they just die and fall off and your blue represents the sky. With the hues of yellow, gold, orange, rust, red, purple, along with brown, gray and near white tree trunks that occur in nature, plus the blue sky, it would be hard to have too much color in a fall quilt!!
I vot #1 & #4 Very pretty!
I noticed your comment about liking the fall colors so I think you'll like #1 best. The blue in the others draws my eye away from the leaves. I like scrappy and #4 is more scrappy to me so if I was making it, I'd do #4.

1 and 4 Beautiful Design
I like three the best, because of the way you have the blue in the secondary block.
#1 is my favorite
They all look great but I like number 3 the best. Nice job
I like 3 the best - but would probably use green strips in place of the browns - like you have done with the blue strips in 4. ... so basically suggesting a fifth variation.
Looks like a great project. Cheers, K |
It sounded like you wanted to break from the traditional (#1) and wanted to incorporate blue, so I think you should go for #3. Number #1 is very nice, but the color combinations are expected.
I like 2 and 3. The suggestion of Autumn sky really works with the fall theme, and the contrast of the cool blue and the warm orange/gold/rust colors add another dimension to the quilt.

I like #4 best if you want to incorporate some blue,
but I do have a suggestion - try switching the placement of the blue and the green. In other words, try a green sashing around the blocks, with blue in the little space you now have green. Also, make the green more of an olive and the blue not quite so bright and see how you like that - just my thoughts. If you used no blue, I do like #1 best. Marcia |
I like the second.
I vote #3
One more thought - unless you are dead set on blue,
try purple. It is a GREAT fall color and would really add some life to it. I do think you need green in there also to balance it out and not make it look too monotone, but purple, or even a blueish purple would really make it pop. Marcia |
