I was just wondering if anyone else uses youtube to learn how to do a technique or how to use a certain tool? I have found some great videos that have given me a lot of help in some areas of quilting and made sence of some of the book instructions I have read.

I hope this is the right spot. I can't seem to get my post into the right forum topic.

Mazda 05-18-2011 11:21 AM

Yes, I have used YouTube for my quilting instructions. Seeing it just somehow helps.

BrendaK 05-18-2011 11:23 AM

I love the visual. I do use utube and enjoy it. BrendaK

craftybear 05-18-2011 11:32 AM

Bonbonary 05-18-2011 11:34 AM

I have definitely found lots of quilting help on YouTube.

pipp5 05-18-2011 11:34 AM

I use it all the time. There isn't anything you can't learn on the internet now days. Could you imagine your life if they suddenly did away with the internet???? Scary!

Tink74 05-18-2011 11:38 AM

I utilize it all the time...I learned English Paper Piecing that way :-)

CoventryUK 05-18-2011 11:41 AM

Yes!! Use it all the time!! Love to watch 'how to do things' easier than reading instructions!!

ann clare 05-18-2011 11:45 AM

I use it too. Found some very helpful tutorials.

mrsk 05-18-2011 11:46 AM

Isn't it funny that so many of us who quilt are "visual" learners. I can have someone explain things repeatedly, no help, but show me once & I've got it!(usually, LOL)

jean1941 05-18-2011 11:53 AM

Great place to learn new things

rookie quilt 05-18-2011 12:09 PM

Most definitely! and for entertainment too. Love the song "I'm the Mom"

BellaBoo 05-18-2011 12:11 PM

I search youtube before Google. From making jam and canning pickles to quilting and everything inbetween. It's not at all just silly videos of whacky people.

Flying_V_Goddess 05-18-2011 12:19 PM

I'm subscribed to the Missouri Star Quilt Co. YouTube page. I have used YouTube to look up certain techniques that I could use or things I'm a little curious about.

justwannaquilt 05-18-2011 12:25 PM

If it wasn't for youtube I don't think I would know the first thing about quilting! lol

cathylynn 05-18-2011 12:26 PM

oh yeah, learned paper piecing by watching several youtube videos. and am doing the Missouri Star Quilt Co Summer in the Park tube quilt for my nephew.

Murphy 05-18-2011 12:39 PM

I have found lots of nifty quilting related videos on You-Tube.

GreatStarter 05-18-2011 01:33 PM

I have just discovered utube. Thanks to the many posts with links I have read on here. I really have enjoyed learning new techniques there.
Thanks, Kat

I actually used it yesterday for the first time, to help with my sewing and quilting. I bought a used White sewing machine (likely from the 70's, metal bobbins) and did not have a clue how to thread it, put the bobbin in, adjust the tension, etc. I did not get a manual with the machine. Did a little searching on Youtube, and voila! Up and running no problem!

wvhill22 05-18-2011 01:51 PM

yes I do that quite often. I love the missouri star quilt co. videos. they are great!

nativetexan 05-18-2011 01:58 PM

i've watched some myself but i tend not to like clicking on links or links to videos due to hackers hitching onto them. computers are very expensive and i do hate getting viruses. that said, i still look at some things.

kat112000 05-18-2011 01:59 PM

You bet! That is how I learned out to miter my boarders.

craftiladi 05-18-2011 02:01 PM

U-tude is wonderful...spend a good part of the morning look at the way others have their sewing rms set up...always looking for something better or hadn't thought of....love ,my google searchs & u-tude.

cmagee84 05-18-2011 02:07 PM

Yes! Love it, use it all the time. Depending on what I am watching it can save me from needing to buy the book!

OHSue 05-18-2011 02:08 PM

My son turned me onto You Tube a while ago just for entertainment. But I subscribe to a number of quilting instructors and when I hear of a new technique it is the first place I go to check out what I can learn.

rnreenie 05-18-2011 02:13 PM

I too subscribed to the Missouri Star Quilt Company YouTube page. I love some of their videos. They make it look so simple and it encourages me to get in that sewing room of mine and get sewing!!!

lfstamper 05-18-2011 02:16 PM

Everything can be found on YouTube. Love it!

musicaljan 05-18-2011 02:24 PM

GADS!!!! Don't even think that. I just don't know what I would do without it now. I fought getting it for years but now I wonder how I lived without it. Could you imagine todays generation living without computers? I try to tell my boys what it was like for me growing up in the 60's and 70's without everything we have now.

Yes, I use it often, too, and I agree you can learn so much by watching things being done and I'm glad I've got it.

But guess what? I lived the first 60 years of my life without computers, cable TV, cell phones, calculators and all the technical stuff available today, and I still learned to sew, quilt, cook, raise kids, garden - my whole life! So yes, I CAN imagine my life without the internet and it's not really so bad!

Krystyna 05-19-2011 03:01 AM

Yes! I need the visual to figure things out. Sometimes reading directions just gets me confused and makes my head hurt! Youtube to the rescue!

Moon Holiday 05-19-2011 03:12 AM

Yes, especially if there's one for a specific block/pattern that I'm about to make. Use it as a little refresher with pattern/block or even as a way to learn shortcuts/tips on a block/pattern. I'm too much of a visual person so while I am able to read a pattern and can chug my way through it.... if you show me how it is done and my mind does an ah-ha and retains it much better.

Mommomjoann 05-19-2011 03:33 AM

How can you "freeze" the moment on the tube while you "try" to do the procedure.is there just a thing, I just keep playing it over and over again!!!!

jeanneb52 05-19-2011 03:34 AM

YUP! Great to be able to actually see and h ear what I need to know.

Maureen 05-19-2011 03:38 AM
