Does the block measure 8" unfinished? Or 8.5" unfinished (which will become 8" finished)?
Basically you want to sew sashing to one side of almost all the blocks (e.g., all the right sides of blocks, except keep a few without sashing for the edge). This sashing will be cut the exact length of the unfinished block. If the unfinished block measures 8", then the length of your sashing strip will be 8". The width of the sashing strip is up to you. Add .5" to the width that you want.
Next step is to sew all the blocks with sashing strips together into rows. You want the left side and right side of each row to be without sashing.
Step after that is to sew a long sashing strip to the bottom of every row except the bottom row.
Turn rows over and extend the seam lines by marking the sashing on the wrong side with pencil and ruler.
Pin top of 2nd row to bottom of 1st row, matching seams to pencil marks. This will keep your blocks properly aligned as you connect the rows.
You can then add sashing or border strips around all four sides.
Hope this isn't too confusing!
