For me it's a combo of what kind of goes with the top and binding and what I truly love. It's a great opportunity to use some of the beautiful, larger prints.

I used to back quilts with fabric that I loved-but not for a quilt. Had nothing to do with front. The back was a total, shocking surprise! But, I ended up liking the front so much, I never see the back, so, I now use calmer, less expensive fabric...usually.

I like a back that thematically matches the front so I shop backing after completing the front. I've done a few orphan backs and while I enjoyed the challenge - lately ive just been tired and want it to be over.

I generally use a fabric that works with the top. Sometimes I luck out and there's a wide back fabric that works. Sometimes I piece a back using blocks left over from the top or using fabric left over from making the top. Most of the time I'm able to find something that will work that is already in my stash, though there have been a couple of times that I purchased fabric specifically for a back, and several times I've over-dyed fabric that I had in my stash in order to change it to a color that works better with the top.

If I'm making a quilt for someone else, I always find out if they have pets. If they do, I try to keep the backing in a mid-color range and try to make the back fit in with the front and then generally quilt with a lighter thread so it shows up. My thinking is, if they're going to be away at work or whatever, they're going to flip the quilt over so they can keep the front of it clean, so I do what I can to make everything cozy up next to each other without a fuss.
