Middle school sewing class: According to the teacher. Material is what you start with, your basic form of any construction, a dress, skirt or blouse. In this case a quilt. I will need various forms of material, fabric, batting, and thread. I use the term fabric.

My husband calls it material too. Drives me nuts!

Jim sometimes calls my Fiskars a pizza cutter. I let him, because honestly, I have done that too, in jest.

I remember in the pilot episode of NCIS that a reference is made to "crocheting" one of the rules on a pillow. Every time I watch that episode I get ready to shout "embroider" at the tv though sometimes I shout "cross stitch" to give some variety.

I cringe when I show or give a quilt and someone says "Oh you made this? How quaint"

I'm from Texas and getting on up there in years. When I was a child, everyone called it "material". It gives me a nostalgic feeling when I hear it.

I have heard it called both, but I use fabric because it is shorter and more specific. Material is more general, the first definition is "the matter from which a thing is or can be made.".

Now how about the difference between material and materiel?
