Same for me. I always put my babies in bed on their tummys and they all survived. Now the most scare is to use only cotton in the blankets as any polyester will melt into the skin if there ever is a fire.

I'm have a comment, and I am not being critical of Grandma, my comments are directed at the new guidelines and the uesers of the guidelines. If you are going to have children, have common sense. We used quilts, blankets, blanket sleepers, bumper pads and like someone said, cut teeth on the cribs themselves!

No one wants to endanger a child. But you can follow all the rules and "something" can still happen. All this does is add to the guilt that the parents experience.
Personally, I'm tired of the "sky is falling" attitude that seems to prevail today.

My daughter still uses a sleep sack and my granddaughter is 17 months old. She has never used the quilts I have made for DGD.

Quilts can still be used for when the baby is in the carseat and traveling. It can be used to keep them warm or to help block the sun. Tummy time is another great use for a quilt and when the baby is a year old, they say it is ok for them to use quilts.

If a person hangs around long enough, you'll see they change the rules all the time. A good friend lost her child to SIDS. The doctor we worked for said she shouldn't have put the baby on her tummy. When I had my son, we weren't to put them on their backs, now they say lay them on their side with a rolled up blanket on their back. At the time she lost her baby, they said smoking wasn't a problem....now they think that when parents smoke, the child is more likely to die from SIDS. I had a relative that had a baby die from SIDS -- she'd done everything as she was supposed to do at the time....the baby died anyways. Some babies move around a lot in their sleep -- mine never did so their quilts stayed put.

My vote is to make the quilt ---- enjoy the baby!!!!

UGH! I am so tired of what's dangerous. In our school district kickball has been banned. What do they do in gym???? I do go along with the restrictions though as I imagine alot of research went into it... I make the little snug sacks. My niece lent me one to copy. I make regular one for the floor for dragging around and the car.

This sounds like it came from the same person who believes that cats will suffocate a newborn. (They won't, just in case you didn't know). And I've worked neonatal ICU and pedi ICU for years. A quilt is just another blanket. It is pillows and other really fluffy things that some recommend not be placed in the bed with infants.
Our Guild makes quilts for the local hospitals for newborns (4 of them) and the nurses all love them. They even call when they are running low and ask for more.

This probably dates me, but our children only slept in what we called a "trundle bundle" It was a one piece bag with arms and a zipper. They were never uncovered but could still move around. Our upstairs was coool and we never worried about them not being warm.

No matter how much our own beds, and our kids' beds, were different from today's guidelines, it is worth paying attention. SIDS is suffocation, plain and simple, and is always a tragedy. So, make baby quilts, and floor quilts, and sleeping sacks, but no bumper pads or crib pillows, and trust the baby's parents to do the right thing.

When I ran a family homeless shelter, I insisted that we have a crib, properly fitted out, available for each baby. If a parent wanted to have the baby sleep with him/her, they had to endure a brief lecture from me on the dangers of SIDS.

I did not want any baby to die on my watch, if I could possibly help it.
