Quilts and Newborns - a No-No?
#81
Funny how the rules change from generation to generation with babies. When my son was a baby, parents were told to never put the baby on his back while sleeping, because they could spit up during the night and choke on thier own vomit. Now they are saying to put them on thier backs. Kind of reminds me of news reports that keep flip-flopping about what foods are good for you and what is not.

I also have adult kids that survived sleeping on their tummies, blankets, bumpers, dropside cribs and toys. I remember when I told my mom and mother-in-law that things had changed and we (our generation) had different "rules"...they thought I was kind of silly. I had two when I was 24 and 26 and two kids at 33 and 35. Things had changed from having kids in my 20's to having kids in my 30's.
I think it's wonderful that we can protect our children, but I think there is an incredible amount of pressure to do the "right" thing. I wonder sometimes if we are not so scared of everything that we have forgotten to enjoy our lives.

Can we take a step back here? Whenever this topic comes up, it seems like we make mountains out of molehills. It's EASY to follow the sleep guidelines. In fact, it's easier to NOT put things in the crib than to place them in there. It's not burdensome; it doesn't interfere a bit with us enjoying our lives! In fact, it's easier, in part because I know I've followed the best guidelines approved by pediatricians to keep my kids safe.

I've made sleep sacs out of fleece for my youngest (just a year old now), not quilted ones. I still make baby quilts, and still used baby blankets, just not in bed :D I'll try to find the tutorial I used to make mine...

Can't help help myself with this one, I must have been a dreadful Mum as I have done everything they now say you shouldn't do to or with your kids these days. How on earth they survived to become healthy well adjusted respectful adults is not only a wonder but a miracle judging by the NO -No's of today.
I wasn't quilting back when they were young, not even sewing but I did have a friend add an envelop to the bottom of all the cot sheets and blankets so these then became like fitted sheets. Couldn't be pulled up past a certain point but could be pushed down.
