I have questions about rag quilts. I have seen on-line instructions where a square of either flannel or cotton quilt batt is sandwiched between the front and back fabric of each square before sewing the "X" on each square.

Some of the instructions say to cut the inner square of flannel or quilt batt the exact same size as the front and back outer quilt squares, but other instructions say to cut the inner square of flannel or quilt batt 1/2 inch smaller than the front and back outer squares.

What is the difference in the finished quilt when you make the middle square the same size as the outer squares as opposed to cutting the inner squares smaller?

I've never done a rag quilt, but it seems if the inner square is cut the same size as the outer squares, the inner square fabric becomes part of the rag edges. So, I'm guessing the rag edges will be thicker and perhaps fluffier.

If cotton quilt batt is used as the inner square and cut the same size as the outer squares, will it rag and fluff up as well as flannel or is it better to use flannel as the inner layer?

Thanks much.
