Smile automatic cutters,thread short

I have worked as a sewing supervisor using commericial machines with automatic cutters.thee machines have a way to change how much thread is left after cutting so you don't lose the thread when starting a new seam. Maybe some home machines did not have this adjustment or your mechanic doesn't know about it. Some newer mechanic don't. Hope this helps.

The adjustment is how tight or loose your upper thread tension is. The bobbin thread never peek up or very little. I use leaders and never have a nesting problem. Also I do not use the thread cutter with invisible as it is too springy and the needle will always come unthreaded. I do not use it with fmq as i dont want little short threads sticking up. I leave tails then cut them real close or bury them.

I often wondered about those automatic thread cutters not leaving enough thread to start again. not something I would look for in a new machine. to me, it's just asking for trouble.

Using the thread cutter is something to get used to, but once you've used it, you will never go back. When I start the next piece, I don't pull up the threads. I might get a little nest, but it doesn't bother me as it is always in my leader or seam allowance. When fmq, I always pull the threads up to the top before stitching so I can deal with them later. Using the cutter is just one less time consuming motion that I don't have to deal with.

Once you get used to the thread cutter and the presser foot being lifted with your foot pedal when you use a machine without it, you feel like you're learning to sew again.

I have always loved my thread cutter, however since I got my machine back from having a problem sorted out at my local brother dealer when I use it then the thread pulls out when I start sewing again !!! I have asked them about it ,none of the things worked,it is really annoying. The machine went in because the timing was out and the bobbin thread wouldn't pull up so I can't see what, or if they caused this problem.

My Brother 1500 had the same problem. The machine has a three hole thread guide bar. The manual shows threading under and over the holes. I use one hole as a guide, thread going down not under and over and now the needle stays threaded. Something is keeping tension on the thread before the tension disc for the needle to come unthreaded. Find out which guide is causing the problem and by- pass it and see it that helps. The Brother dealer and repairman wasn't any help at all. The repairman wanted me to buy a new thread cutter.
