I use my 6 x 24 lip edge ruler the most, but recently purchases a 18" ruler with adjusable locking fabric guide. It's been a great ruler for cutting, made by Westalee design,Victoria, Australia. It has an adjustable piece that lays next to the fabric and you will get the same size cut each time.

For mats I like the Friskars ones. I like the
Shape cutter rulers and many of the specialty rules from Quilt in a Day. I do not like the June Tailor cutting mats at all.

The 3 I use most often are 6.5x24", 6x12" and the Shape Cut. My 12" Olfa mat that turns on itself is always on my cutting table.

I ordered an Alvin self healing mat. you can order them from most any quilting site or a site that sells products for draftsmen and architects. I have used the other brand mats and this is the best I have ever had. It is really self healing, I have been using it a year now with no ruts in it. They come in different sizes and you can order clear or green. I don't think they are any more expensive that Olfa or the other brands.

I've only been using this little ruler the most lately because of the number of paper piecing projects I've been doing - it's the "Add a Quarter" ruler. It has a little ridge on the bottom that snugs right up to the folded up paper to give you a good 1/4 " cut when trimming excess fabric. I know this is not a necessity, and may be considered extravagant, but it's come in very handy for the paperpiecing, and adding the quarter inch to some other patches I designed that needed the 1/4'" added.
Have fun shopping - you may end up with more than you planned - my problem when going on a trip and shopping for supplies or whatever - if I don't buy it when I see it, I'll dwell on it later wishing I had picked it up - then need to go back to get it later!

Also, I have not seen where anyone mentioned that the self-healing mats can be washed or wiped with a damp cloth which helps to "heal" the mat - so you can get one and keep it nice that way.
