Yes, it's a more traditional quilt. 1 1/2 inches seems to be about right. Thank you all for your help.

I would plan 1.5" but when you have a few blcoks done, do a layout and see what size appeals to you.

It all just depends on the look you're going for (and of course, if you prefer some other measurement for your sashing, there's nothing wrong with that; art is all about innovation and experimentation! Go with what looks good to you).
What is the "golden ratio?" I've never heard of it.

My husband, a math PhD, calls it the Golden Mean. It is the relationship of the length to the width. Think of a 3x5 card, pictures that are 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 etc. We made charity quilts a few years back, and one lady brought one in that was much too long for its width. It looked really strange.
So I guess I would say the Golden Mean is a pleasing-to-the-eye relationship of the length and width.

Google "Fibonacci Sequence". It is a mathematical sequence of numbers that is found in nature. I always think of the introduction to the TV show "Numbers" when I use it.

I like Paper Princess' solution - what I usually do. And it usually winds up being 1.5 for 6 in. blocks.

You could always lay your block on the sashing fabric and audition it at various widths to see what looks best for you.

My general "Kelly's rule of thumb" is roughly 1/3 the width of the full block or smaller. This does not mean I never change it, I just use it to begin designing, and if it needs to be wider for effect, it is wider.

Didn't you ever watch Disney's "Donald In Mathmagic Land" movie in school, with Donald Duck? If not, here you go!

Donald in Mathmagic Land

I highly recommend it, no matter your age. It will be worth your time, I promise.
