I always wanted a sister too, so after my mother died an orphaned close friend and I "adopted" each other as sisters. We figured that since we loved each other like sisters, we might as well BE sisters. I've since added another sister under similar circumstances, and we feel very fortunate to have each other. Neither sew, though, so I still do that alone, at least until I find another kindred adoptable friend. One wants a wonky-design quilt, though, so that's being planned together. My middle brother once protested that I do not have a sister, to which I replied that I sure do, we just had different parents.
